Vacation planning

My husband and have started to plan trips now that the kids are adults. This year we decided to try out the role of snowbird, heading down south for a few weeks of warmer weather. The most important choices I’ve had to make as I consider what to bring to our rental are books and knitting. It’s been a tough decision-making process, but I think I’ve finally chosen.

I probably take vacation projects far too seriously. As when I’m at home, I like to have options because my mood will change. Maybe I need something a little complicated but I might also want something simple.

We’re going to be driving, so I need books and projects enough for four days (there and back) of driving as well as during my actual vacation.

Without further ado, my important vacation selections.

To Knit

  • I’m finishing up my Fidget Socks. These lovelies are almost done so I just need to work on the leg a little more, add some ribbing and cast off. The yarn is Gusto Wool Echoes.
  • Because I’ll have my sock needles with me, if I finish up the Fidget sock, I can cast on a super vanilla sock (from a memorized pattern) in Felici, which makes amazing socks.
  • My “big” project is still a fairly simple pattern. I’m knitting the F957 Spiral Rib Cowl for a friend in yarn she asked me to knit something for her from (another pattern that didn’t work with this yarn so I picked this project). The yarn is Yakima from Plymouth Yarn in gray. This yarn is SO soft. The pattern is simple enough to memorize (though I do have to row track) but interesting enough to keep me from getting bored.

To Read

  • The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune. I can’t remember who I originally heard about this from, but I mentioned to several friends that I was going to read this on my beach vacation and they were delighted. I’m very excited to read this.
  • The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson. I have a goal of reading six non-fiction books this year. Apparently this book is half architecture of the World Fair and half serial killer so it seemed like a good driving listen for my husband and I. I have a few other audio books in my Libro.fm queue as we’re going to be in the car for a lot of hours. A lot.
  • And a surprise addition, Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay. I had forgotten to check my library book requests and this one came due. So, we’re adding a little horror reading to our vacation as well.

Alright, friends, now that the important details are finalized, I suppose I should start thinking about what to pack…
